Why are fighter jets so loud?
In contrast, military fighter jets use low-bypass, turbo-jet engines which are generally noisier than commercial aircraft engines. Most have after-burners for additional thrust and noise and can fly faster than the speed of sound (supersonic, or faster than 1,225km/h).
Sonic boom is an impulsive noise similar to thunder. It is caused by an object moving faster than sound -- about 750 miles per hour at sea level. An aircraft traveling through the atmosphere continuously produces air-pressure waves similar to the water waves caused by a ship's bow.
Departing planes are heavy with fuel, passengers, and cargo. To get all this weight up means jet engines are near full power, which is really loud. Frequent departing flights concentrated over a home every few minutes is simply really, really loud.
A study of noise on Airbus A321 aircraft reported levels of 60-65 decibels (dBA) before takeoff; 80-85 dBA during flight; and 75-80 dBA during landing. The outside of aircraft engines (around 140 dB at takeoff) and conditions on other aircraft may have higher or lower noise levels.
The XF-84H was almost certainly the loudest aircraft ever built, earning the nickname "Thunderscreech" as well as the "Mighty Ear Banger". On the ground "run ups", the prototypes could reportedly be heard 25 miles (40 km) away.
If you're WONDERing about how pilots handle sonic booms, they actually don't hear them. They can see the pressure waves around the plane, but people on board the airplane can't hear the sonic boom. Like the wake of a ship, the boom carpet unrolls behind the airplane.
“The F/A-18 Super Hornet produces 118 decibels of noise, which is the equivalent of a rock concert,” Schrock said. “A reduction of four decibels would have a significant impact on noise issues related to our military aircraft.”
Anything exceeding the speed of sound creates a "sonic boom", not just airplanes. An airplane, a bullet, or the tip of a bullwhip can create this effect; they all produce a crack. This pressure change created by the sonic boom can be quite damaging.
Over the past 50 years, aircraft have reduced their noise output by 75% and this progress continues. Today's aircraft entering service have on average, a noise footprint that is 30-50% that of the aircraft they are replacing thanks to new engine and airframe design and technology.
However, according to Kochan, if you're flying long-haul and noise is your biggest bugbear you should really favour the aisle seat. Research found that the noise experienced in window seats was four decibels higher than the middle and aisle seats.
Where is quietest on plane?
In a Facebook video, a JetBlue pilot explains that the quietest seats on an airplane are forward of the wings, because the engines are located under the wings. “Sitting in front of the wing is like being behind a speaker.
Human screams can be quite loud, possibly exceeding 100 dB (as of March 2019, the world record is 129 dB!) —but you probably want to avoid that because screams that loud can hurt your ears! You should also have found sound levels drop off quickly as you get farther from the source.

A whisper is between 20-30 dB. On the other hand, a human scream can reach decibel levels between 80 and 125 dB.
Understanding Decibel Levels
For comparison purposes, a shotgun produces 155 dB on average. Prolonged exposure to high decibel levels can come from everyday sounds. When we're continually exposed to these noises, hearing loss gradually happens.
The A380 is regarded as having the quietest cabin environment amongst modern widebody commercial aircraft. The website tinitustalk.com pulled research figures together for several widebody aircraft – with the A380 coming in lowest at 69.5 dB.
The loudest aircraft ever flown was likely the Republic XF-84H "Thunderscreech", a turboprop-driven variant of the US Air Force's F-84 Thunderjet fighter.
A supersonic aircraft is an aircraft capable of supersonic flight, that is, flying faster than the speed of sound (Mach number 1). Supersonic aircraft were developed in the second half of the twentieth century.
Currently, U.S. law prohibits flight in excess of Mach 1 over land unless specifically authorized by the FAA for purposes stated in the regulations. The two supersonic rulemaking activities would not rescind the prohibition of flight in excess of Mach 1 over land.
Within the United States, it is illegal to break the sound barrier. The Federal Aviation Administration regulations are quite clear: "No person may operate a civil aircraft in the United States at a true flight Mach number greater than 1" except in certain, very limited conditions.
At speeds of 950 to 1,000 km/h (590 to 620 mph) the air flow around the aircraft reaches the speed of sound, and it is reported that the control surfaces no longer affect the direction of flight. The results vary with different airplanes: some wing over and dive while others dive gradually.
How loud is a 747 jet engine?

If you stood with your head inside the engine, you'd hear a 165 decibel roar. We don't recommend doing this; the human ear drum breaks instantly when exposed to sounds louder than 160 decibels. The sound of takeoff, if you're nearby, is around 140 decibels.
New aircraft generate considerably less noise than their predecessors. Aircraft engines today are significantly quieter, thanks to dramatic advancements in aircraft engine design.
A subway train that's 200 feet away generates approximately 95 dBA, a helicopter at 1,000 feet generates approximately 78 dBA, and from 100 ft away a jet aircraft taking off generates approximately 140 dBA.
The effects of sonic boom on man's physical and mental health are presented. Why don't we ever hear sonic booms any more? Noise abatement regulations halted supersonic flight (by civil aircraft) over U.S. land. The Concorde could still take off and land here because it broke the sound barrier over the ocean, but it's no longer in service.
During the day, when the air is warmer than the ground, noise energy from an airplane staying in the air, so while you can still hear it, it seems quieter. Conversely, at night, when the ground is warmer than the air, the noise is drawn down, making it seem louder.
Aircraft engines today are significantly quieter, thanks to dramatic advancements in aircraft engine design. Examples of engine design improvements that reduce noise include high bypass ratio turbofan, acoustic liner technology and the use of mixers and chevrons.
New aircraft coming on-stream over the next 20 years or so will cut noise levels by 0.1- 0.2 decibels each year. Beyond that period, different designs which the industry is working on may well mean more significant noise reductions.
Screech is produced by a feedback mechanism in which a disturbance convecting in the shear layer generates sound as it traverses the standing system of shock waves in the jet. Even though screech is a side effect of the jet's flight, it can be suppressed by an appropriate design for a nozzle.
Why do you see a fighter jet before you hear it?
Supersonic jets fly faster than the speed of sound, which means that you will see the jet before you hear it. The loud sound it makes won't be able to catch up to it!
The Air Force's own data shows that the F18, F22 and F35 are all substantially louder than the current F-16s that fly out of TIA (and must land at DM to receive live ordnance for training), 9-20 decibels louder(two-three times as loud perceptually, 10-100 times the physical energy).

Only three prototypes were ever made for the XF-84, and its engine was the most powerful on the planet at the time. A second U-2 pilot normally "chases" each landing in a high-performance vehicle, assisting the pilot by providing radio inputs for altitude and runway alignment. These characteristics combine to earn the U-2 a widely accepted title as the most difficult aircraft in the world to fly.
What is the best U.S. jet for dogfighting?
The F-15EX is considered one of the best dogfighters among the American jets. According to the Air Force Mag, F-35 and F-15EX aircraft cost around $80 million per aircraft. While the former is known for its stealth capability, the latter has more firepower and can fly higher, further, and quicker.
Commercial airliners typically fly between 500 and 600 mph, while private and military jets can go much faster. Supersonic aircraft are able to fly even faster, with some capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 3. This means they can fly at more than two times the speed of sound.
